CONSTITUENCY 96 CHAIRMAN CALLS FOR POLICE BEEFUP

The newly elected Chairman for Constituency 96 in Freetown Samuel B. Conteh has said that there is a need for beefing up of the police personnel at his constituency.

The constituency which covers Allen town, Jui and its environs lack adequate police personnel. “For the police to meet the challenges of the constituency there is a need for adequate personnel,” he said.
He pointed out that the police are short of personnel even though they want to carry out their operational functions. He also pointed out that there is a need for upgrading the police post such as the one at Jui and Waterloo because Allen town is as important as those at Waterloo and Jui.
Explaining what prompted him to take such a position, Mr. Conteh said when the former chairman, James Kargbo died in January this year he was asked to act in that capacity while on his new appointment as Public Relations Officer. “I saw the need as a person with my kind of Public Relations to serve people to move the community forward because of my experience as a professional journalist they saw that I can bring positive change to Constituency 96,” he said.
Constituency 96 is one of the constituencies with a lot of opportunity and Mr. Conteh said crime is one of their difficulties especially stealing and robbery. He pointed out that they are in the need of organizing monthly meetings with stakeholders including the police to put modalities in place that will help to bring down the rate of crime in the constituency. “We are also mobilizing the youths to help the police fight against crime in our area,” he said.
In the area of bad roads, poor electricity and water supply, Mr. Conteh said they will engage the authorities to help rescue some of their problems. “We believe that if electricity is good, it will help to create self employment through small skills and other businesses,” he said.
He emphasized that cooperation with the police will create a safe environment in the society and asked residents to provide adequate information to the police so that their work in the constituency will not be difficult. Pointing out that they will soon strengthen the police partnership for adequate security.
The new chairman spoke about the deplorable market at Allen town which frightens away people to stay home or sell in the streets. “We are talking with relevant authorities to give us a good market structure so as to minimize street trading,” he said.
In the area of violence which is one of the serious problems not only in Allen Town but in the country, Mr. Conteh urged the police to arrest and prosecute anyone involved in such act. “We shall do away with such a person and that there will be no sacred cows,” he said.
As part of their unity campaign he went on to say that they will hold series of sensitization programmes to make people realize the importance of unity and the prevalence of justice in the community as he put it without justice no unity it will be difficult to come by. “If we fight crime the people will be satisfied.”
He also appealed to the Chief Justice for a Magistrate Court for the people in the community to seek redress speedily because of the distance of the courts from the community. "We shall fight against impunity, get away with injustice, domestic violence and drugs, he said. But he was quick to mention that this will involve all and it will be everybody’s business.
He ended up by calling on religious leaders to preach religious tolerance in the Constituency.
