Africell Prepares Unemployed Graduates For A Brighter Future

As part of it Corporate Social Responsibility Sierra Leone’s biggest GSM operator africell, joined other partners in preparing unemployed graduates for a brighter future in a day’s job creation workshop.

The event which took place at the British Council over the week brought together over three hundred graduates from various institutions has as its theme “Employability and Economic Productivity takes more than a University Degree”
Africell Corporate Affairs Officer Joe Abass Bangura in his statement said the investments africell have made in the country have created more than 800 direct employments and more than 5,000 indirect employments. That he said includes dealers, security companies, maintenance companies and several other institutions that provide services to africell.
“The direct and indirect economic effect of africell’s investment in the country is also very huge,”
He went on to say human investment through training of personnel in the practical application of knowledge gained in school is priceless, this he said is because no school can completely and adequately prepare one for the requirements of the workplace.
“Africell today wishes to announce the launching of its job training scheme for graduates. As a pilot project, Africell will provide an opportunity for 3 graduates to benefit from a 3 months internship in the company. After the 3 months, candidates who meet certain requirements will have the chance of being offered fulltime employment,” he said.
He went on to say that the pilot offer is restricted to participants in that workshop and all applications with CV should be sent to the Corporate Affairs Officer Africell, with a clearly marked Graduates Internship Scheme.
Sierra Leone Unemployed Youths Advocacy Group President Mohamed Dennis Sesay said the country is facing massive youth unemployment yet still people see things differently. He described the Universities as institutions that are now producing generals instead of specialists.
In his keynote address National Youth Commissioner Anthony Koroma encouraged the graduates to be patient as no one can be in this world without problems or challenges, “You should kick the ordeals. The first thing you should do is for you to be ambitious that you will make it in life,”
He further stated that there are opportunities out there for them but they need to prepare themselves in self training through that he said they will be more determined to face the challenges.
Unemployed graduates discussed vital topics such as Transitioning from Agricultural Science Graduate to business Manager, practical job creation opportunities and mindset among others.
Statements were also made by United Nations Development Programmed (UNDP) which is one of the sponsor and Manager University of Sierra Leone CAPS Centre.
