Third generation mobile phone technology or 3G is an extension of 2G. 3G operates on a different radio frequency to 2G, allowing better clarity and access to global roaming between 3G networks. 3G offers a higher data rate transfer than 2G, has a greater capacity than 2G and is also capable of operating on 2G networks. 2G was designed for slow transmission, with simple voice data being its main function. 3G is built for speed and versatility.
3G extends pre-existing mobile technology to give wider coverage and incorporates high speed Internet technology (600 kbit/s to 1.4 mbit/s). It capitalises on advances made in wireless technology in order to provide a more efficient mobile experience. 3G is able to support applications that require extensive bandwidth, such as full motion video, full internet access and video conferencing. A standard 3G handset will have wireless voice capabilities, wireless video, wireless broadband data, camera, music player, smart card inserts, web browser and other office applications. You are able to join your 3G handset to your home phone so that you don't have to receive a separate bill or recharge, meaning you will not run out of credit.
In short, 3G is fast, has superior coverage, and is capable of working on GPRS networks if you are out of a 3G access area. It offers numerous applications that are not available in other networks and has easier access.
