SOLO B. DAMNS CONSTITUTIONAL REVIEW

Former  Vice President  of Sierra Leone and Presidential Aspirant of the Sierra Leone People’s Party (SLPP) Solomon Ekuma Berewa has described the constitutional review as a mere waste of resources.
The elderly statesman was speaking to SALONE TIMES recently in an exclusive interview at his Goderich resident in Freetown.

According to Solo B as he is commonly called, there is nothing wrong with the 1991 Constitution of Sierra Leone.
“There is nothing wrong with the 1991 constitution, if you ask me and if I was the Antony General I will never advice for it to be amended.”
He pointed out that the American constitution is small but it is doing well. The Gambia constitution as well is doing fine, while England has no written constitution but they are going fine because the right people take up office.
He went on to say a good leader can run a country with a very small constitution.
“You can put a fine language in the constitution but if you get a bad man that is governing the nation, the constitution will turn out to be bad. Think about the huge sum of money that has being spent. That money should have been used in other areas.”
The former Vice President who is a seasoned lawyer stressed that he sees nothing wrong with the Supreme Executive in the 1991 constitution, adding that “the constitution is supreme but it is just a paper, it need somebody to make it work which is the President as the first gentle man of the country.”
“Who will be greater than the President?” Solomon Berewa asked.
He further stated that the 1991 constitution made more provision on gender. He reflected the amount of women that were in their cabinets when they were in governance.
He said the laws SLPP passed were to change, amend or modify the obnoxious laws the Military made.
He mentioned that the National Social Security and Insurance Trust (NASSIT), National Revenue Authority (NRA), Office of National Security (ONS) and the introduction of Minimum Wages were not done under the constitution but by other legislations.

“Why should we waste time on that, it has being the constitution all this time. They should not have wasted much time on that. The 1991 constitution should have gone for the next 10 years and Sierra Leone will prosper.” Story By Ibrahim Joenal Sesay
