UNESCO Takes On Memory of the World Training and Capacity Building

UNESCO in partnership with the Ministry of Tourism and Culture Affairs has ended two days Memory of the World (MoW) Training and Capacity Building of Stakeholders.

The two days session began on Monday 27th May and ended yesterday 28th May at the Family Kingdom.
UNESCO Regional Office, Abuja Project Officer Jestina Simba explained that the specific objective of the training was the formation of the National Memory of the World Committee in Sierra Leone.
She continues to say other objectives include:
 Establish and maintain the country’s Memory of the World Register and encourage, receive and assess nominations of documentary heritage for inclusion in it.
 To ensure the nation’s endangered heritage is protected
 To identify and select projects, submit them to the International Advisory Committee (IAC) or its regional committee, follow them up and raise funds for their implementation.
 Work in close cooperation with governmental and Non-governmental organizations in the country to develop the National register and contributing to the International register.
 Raise awareness of and promote the Memory of the World Programme in the Country.
 Encourage and seek government and Private Sector sponsorship for specific Memory of World projects and activities in the country.
She added that their expected results are:
 National Memory of the World Committee is established.
 Awareness is raised on the Memory of World Programme.
 Collaboration between NATCOMs and Memory Institutions established.
 Partnership with Member States, private sectors and non-governmental organizations concerned are established
 Functional and a medium term plan for MoW is established and recognized for its maintenance, support and visibility.
 MoW committee facilitate the engagement of national policy makers to introduce or strengthen the Memory of the World programme in the country.
Dr. Victoria Okojie gave the history about the Memory of the World Comprehensive review of the MoW Programme: Experts designated by Member States participated in a joint meeting on 1 April 2019 with members of the Memory of the World (MoW) International Advisory Committee (IAC).
She said during the meeting of 14 February 2019 the Open Ended Working Group adopted its terms of reference, thus defining its mandate and working modalities.
She continued to say UNESCO established the Memory of the World Programme in 1992. Impetus came originally from a growing awareness of the parlous state of preservation of, and access to, documentary heritage in various parts of the world. War and social upheaval, as well as severe lack of resources, have worsened problems which have existed for centuries. Significant collections worldwide have suffered a variety of fates. Looting and dispersal, illegal trading, destruction, inadequate housing and funding have all played a part. Much as vanished forever; much is endangered. Happily, missing documentary heritage is sometimes rediscovered.
Participants were drawn from different departments and agencies such as the National Museum, Monuments and Relics Commission, Sierra Leone Artists and Heritage Foundation among others.
Different suggestions were made which UNESCO and the Ministry of Tourism and Culture Affairs are going to work on to meet their objectives.
