Ministry of Information Organises Orientation Seminar for New Information Officers

The Ministry of Information and Commuication on Monday 8th August 2011 organised a five day intensive orientation seminar for all newly recruited staff of the Sierra Leone News Agency (SLENA) and the Ministry of Information and Communication at the Miatta Conference Hall Youyi Building in Freetown.

Speaking at the ceremony, the State House Chief of Staff, Kaifala Marah stated that the seminar is for the newly recruited staff to know their roles and responsibilities. He commended the Ministry for the way in which they have been executing the ministry’s activities.
He noted that with the calibre of people they have recruited, the ministry will surely move ahead. He pointed out several successes which the ministry has undertaken describing them as pro-active measures being taken by the government.

He maintained that the role of the staff is to work in the interest of the ministry and if any one fails to perform according to the expectation of the civil services procedures, his or her contract will be terminated. He encouraged them to work with theDirector of Communication at State House so that they can be au fait with government policies and the Aganda for Change.
He disclosed that very soon the government will open the Civil Service College in which civil servants will be schooled on matter relating to civil services. He furthered that they should be strategic and position themselves vertically, inorder to enhance growth in the ministry and other public sectors.
In his statement the Chairman of the Public Service Commision Val Collier stated that the training forms the basis of capacity building. He asked the recruits to develop good interpersonal relationship with both the media and the public. He cautioned them that there was going to be an appraisal report which clearly spells out performances of every individual and therefore they should be productive and developmental oriented in their respective fields of assigement.
In his speech, the Secretary to Cabinet and Head of Civil Services Sahr G Pessima said that the civil service is a part and arm of government and comprise all sectors of government irrespective of its nature. He said that its role is to advice ministers and other political appointees on matters relating to their department. He noted as civil servants, they should be neutral and loyal to any government.
He furthered that a civil servant should respect personal hygene, fairness, and work within the framework of the law.
He added that Sierra Leone Civil Service has been rated high due to their non interferance into politics, neutrality, salaries and other conditions of service.
In his address, the Minister of Information and Communication, Alhaji Ibrahim Ben Kargbo said the orientation is to improve on the knowledge of the young recruits so that they can be well equipped in carrying out their functions. The Minister said the new recruits came so that the ministry’s presence can be felt in all corners of the country. He said the ministry has put things in place for the information officers to be fully operational in the area of ICT and other commnuication tools.
He advised them of all to operate within the civil service procedures.
