Health Ministry Commend SLAJ Intervention On Ebola

The Ministry of Health and Sanitation (MOHS) through the Public Relation Office has thanked the Sierra Leone Association of Journalists (SLAJ) for their timely intervention in the Ebola outbreak.
Jonathan Abass Kamara is the Health and Sanitation Public Relation Officer “The Ministry is very pleased with the intervention of SLAJ in the fight against Ebola “He made this remark during the MOHS and SLAJ Press Conference at the Harry Yassaneh Conference Hall Campbell Street, Freetown yesterday Thursday 7th August 2014, as their own role in ensuring that the right message reached every citizen of the nation. Kamara went on to say that Journalists indeed followed the announcement made by the President of SLAJ Kelvin Lewis. He said through the intervention of SLAJ, they now have nationwide coverage of sensitization of the virus through TV, radios and Newspapers. He also announced that the update press conference will be coming every forth night. He stressed that President Koroma and the Health Ministry call is for all death to be reported before burial. Speaking about the role of Civil Society in the fight against Ebola, Executive Director, Health For All Coalition HFAC-SL Charles Mambu commended SLAJ and Civil Society for their role in the fight against ebola in the country. He said they have mounted a robust sensitization for the fight against ebola. He disclosed that they have trained 100 people in each district in the drive to educate and handle ebola cases. He went on to say while they are supporting the Ministry of Health to take best practice to share their experience on their challenges they call the government to improve stipends and status for health workers especially those that have died who have left their family behind while serving the nation and saving lives of others. "We want a sustainable government partners for those that pass away. The little they are getting will not be enough for their family,”Mambu said. He also called on the government for them to pay two month advanced salaries to those who are in Kailahun and Kenema for them to sustain their families. Mambu disclosed further that voice from ebola front lines will be coming up in different forms for those who did not believe to change their mind. Alusine Kamara Health Education Division thanked SLAJ for information dissemination. He said President Koroma has launched the Assimilated ebola response plan and that the ebola centers are being controlled by World Health Organisation. Since the announcement of ebola on the 25 of May 2014 in the country the number of cases reported as of the 6th August 2014 is as follows: Ebola outbreak update as of the 6th August 2014, we have a total of 161 patients who have survived Ebola Virus Disease and subsequently discharged. The total number of new confirmed cases are 32 and total cumulative number confirmed death is 214. The total number of cumulative confirmed cases is 623 with: Kailahun 364, Kenema 218; Kono 1; Kambia 1; Bombali 5; Tonkolili 1; Port Loko 8; Pujehun 2; Bo 12; Moyamba 4; Bonthe 1; Western Area Urban 6. As of today, Koinadugu district is the only district that has not registered any confirmed case of Ebola in Sierra Leone.
