Hon.FodayRadoYokie
of Constituency 068 Bo district exposed Airtel in Parliament. He said that
Airtel issued over 100 bounce cheques to members of parliament and that
according to him, cheques given to members of parliament were supposed to be
2016 but Airtel gave them 2015 cheques.
He
made this statement when the Committee of Information and Communication
summoned Airtel last Thursday June 8th this year at the
Administrative Building Conference Room, Tower Hill in Freetown
“When
we went to the bank to cash the cheques, they were all bounce, Airtel is not
doing us favor and it is our right. I want Airtel to rewrite the cheques,’’ Hon RadoYokie explained.
He
said that he considers Airtel as gang of armed robbers as NATCOM is not
protecting the people of this country against Airtel.
Hon.
Ibrahim Ben Kargbo who chaired the committee meeting explained that Sierra
Leone wants to be competitive in the area of telecommunication sector.
Hon
IB Kargbo revealed that he has received complains about poor quality of network
provided by Airtel and that they want Airtel to explain their transition from
Airtel to Orange.
“Drop calls are too many. The quality of
service has dropped almost to an embracing level and even in transition there
is no communication with members of parliament and the public,” Chairman IB Kargbo
sighed.
Hon. Kargbo
pointed out when Sierra Leone Cable Network (SALCAB) landed the submarine cable;
it was to improve on their network but that they see Airtel going down the
drains.
Responding
to the Members of the Committee, CEO of Orange, Shekou Darame explained that on
July 19th 2016, Airtel was sold to Orange Group and that the company
is trying to link their facilities in Senegal to Freetown.
He apologized for the poor quality of services
delivered to the public as they need to have standard facilities.
The
Director of Human Resources Airtel, Barry Honnah said Orange planned to invest
on 33 sites.
Hon
ShekuSannoh said the problem of Airtel started when the technical team was sent
to Indian for training.
“NATCOM
is not regulating Airtel properly; NATCOM should go to Airtel because the
Indians were just reaping off the people,” Hon ShekuSannoh.
Hon.Alhassan Kamara asked the CEO to give them
assurance that they are going to improve the network.
Hon
KaifalaConteh stated that they don’t have problem with site expansion but with
quality of service, adding that even if airtel comes up with hundred reasons,
they cannot convinced the people of this country.
